Planting Pumpkin Seeds In The Desert
Before living here in the desert I would never have imagined that you could grow any vegetables let alone Pumpkins in the desert…
To my surprise, last year I effortlessly grew Butternut Squash. Since Winter Squash, and Pumpkins are similar I am hoping that growing Pumpkins will be as easy, and take about as much time.
Actually, Butternut Squashes are said to take 85 – 125 days to mature. The Old Farmers Almanac says that Pumpkins take 75 -100 frost-free days to mature, we’ll see…
When To Plant Seeds Outdoors?
The best time to plant Pumpkin seeds outdoors where I live, in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona, is all of March, then again all month in July, and the first part of August.
Starting Seeds Indoors
In Casa Grande AZ the last spring frost date is March 11-20th. The last spring frost date for my area in Coolidge is April 1st – April 10th. Pumpkin seeds can be planted indoors 2-3 weeks before last spring frost date… Then transplant when the soil temperatures have warmed up, Old Farmers Almanac.
If my experience watering Butternut Squash is anything like watering Pumpkins, they need water… Last year, I watered the whole garden with tripod sprinklers about 1 hour every other day or every two days, depending on how wet everything looked and the squash loved it, we ended up with a box of lovely Butternut Squash.
How much you water will depend on your area, the squash will grow like weeds if given enough food and water.
- Leave the Pumpkins on the vine as long as possible
- Measure the Pumpkins periodically to see if they are still growing
- Do not pick till Pumpkins until the skin has turned Orange, and has developed a hard shell
- Remove Pumpkins from the vine using a sharp knife, leaving a nice size stem
- Carry them with hands under the Pumpkin, not by the stem
My seeds have started sprouting, and now I’m just looking forward to the beautiful Pumpkins that my garden will produce, so excited I can hardly wait…
Praying For A Barrel Full
Let’s pray for a huge barrel full of delicious Pumpkins… Pumpkins can be stored 30 – 90 days, in a cool dark place…
If you plan to store them for a long time like me, you will want to wash them with a mild chlorine solution to kill any bacteria that could cause the Pumpkins to rot,,,
I was wondering about this for other fruits and did something similar when storing a case of Oranges that I bought in bulk… And they lasted a long time in the Fridge.
A good ratio would be 8oz Unscented Bleach to 1 Gallon of Water. Rince and dry Pumpkins well before storing.
