The internet is full of do, it yourself projects and finding a recipe for making your own herbal shampoo comes easily… I have decided to take what I found and create my own recipe…
What I Learned
I learned that certain herbs are better for certain hair colors, some herbs will lighten and some will darken hair color.
Blonds do well to use lighter herbs, like Horsetail, Red clover, Chamomile, and Marigold. If you have Black or Gray Hair Nettle leaves, Rosemary leaves and Sage work better.
Some herbs are good for stimulating growth, and some are good for dry, oily, or normal hair.
Rosemary is good for stimulating hair growth, Nettles increase blood circulation, Horsetail strengthens hair. Fo-ti, or Polygonum multiflorum. Also called He Shou Wu, this herb is widely used in China to prevent hair loss. Green Tea is also known to benefit hair growth.
What You Will Need To Create Your Own Herbal Shampoo!
To make your own herbal shampoo, you need 3ozs castile soap, 2 cups distilled or spring water, an empty 8oz bottle, 5-6 tbsp herbs of your choice, if you have very dry hair you might add a 1/8 teaspoon of good oil (Olive, Apricot, Avocado) to your herbal shampoo.
Bring water to boil, add herbs and steep for 40 minutes, pour castile soap into the bottle, add oil to castile soap, and swirl to mix, when herbs have steeped, strain them and fill your bottle the rest of the way with your herbal tea. Cap and let it cool. Do not shake, swirl gently, hot liquids and soap can create pressure or explode.
