Uses For Baking Soda
Baking Soda, Bicarbonate of Soda, or Sodium Bicarbonate is a weak alkaline, it neutralizes acids, breaks down proteins, leavens breads, stabilizes ph, cleans and deodorizes.
Baking Soda used as a drug is called Bicarbonate of Soda or Sodium Bicarbonate… Sodium Bicarbonate is often chosen to treat, heartburn, indigestion, ulcers, cancer, flu, diabetes, kidney disease, colds & even radiation exposure because of it’s ability to detox…
It is used transdermally in the form of a bath soak, taken by mouth, inhaled by nebuliser for lung conditions, and used in intravenous solutions or iv drip…
In the case of Cancer, research is showing that cancer prevails in an overly acid body, sodium bicarbonate can neutralize and balance an over acid condition, in some cases reversing cancer…
I never expected to find this information about curing cancer with sodium bicarbonate, but since I have it has got me thinking about my bodies ph… and caused me to go take a warm bath with 1 cup of baking soda… it was relaxing if nothing else…
No doubt you have heard, that acid rain is killing our lakes, the way that it does it is by lowering the oxygen levels in the water, when levels are too low it kills fish and other water creatures,,, adding baking soda or sodium bicarbonate to the lake can balance the acid and bring the oxygen levels back up so that fish can live in the lake again… bringing our lakes back to life…
It works the same way in our bodies, if you have an overly acid body, you will not have enough oxygen for all your cells, your energy levels will be low due to low oxygen… If we can bring our ph out of the acid range to a more balanced level we will be able to get our oxygen levels up too, making us feel more energetic and be healthier. Before you start eating baking soda have your ph levels checked,,, We cannot live in either extreme, over alkalized is just as serious as being over acidic.
Using Baking Soda for health is a topic that needs further investigation… maybe a subject for a future post…
In all my years I had not known that baking soda can be used as a meat tenderizer,,, but I do recall eating Chinese food that tasted a lot like baking soda which would be consistent with what I found about using it to tenderize small pieces of meat that is common in Asian cuisines…
Most cooks know about baking sodas ability to leaven baked goods, it works when you add it to a liquid (water, milk, ect.) and an acid (yogurt, butter milk, lemon juice, vinegar, citric acid) creating a chemical reaction that makes carbon dioxide bubbles that become trapped in the batter making baked goods rise. The trapped bubbles make the difference in a baked good that is light and fluffy or one that is flat and heavy…
Something interesting happened the other day when I was making breakfast… Pancakes were on the menu, and I had a sourdough starter that was left over from pancakes the week before,,, It really was not a regular sourdough starter, it was left over pancake batter that I added yeast and yogurt to, that had come alive with bubbles and was sour from the yogurt.
Since it was not regular sourdough, I was not sure it was going to be enough to give my pancakes a rise, after adding a cup and half of flour, more water, and what I thought was a small amount of baking soda to the mix, I soon realized that what I actually added was citric acid,,, it was in the same type of container as my baking soda, I failed to read the label.
I didn’t panic, and went ahead and added the baking soda,,, and guess what happened? It bubbled like crazy,,,and after adjusting the batter to my tastes, with more sugar, salt and vanilla I made the best fluffiest pancakes that I had in a very long time… Not knowing that citric acid is a common baking ingredient I did an internet search to find out if anyone else used citric acid in baked goods,,, and found lots of information about baking and different acids…
Now I think that I can make my own baking powder, since I hate the taste of commercial baking powder this would be a good thing…
All this talk about Pancakes, makes me want one now, hot with melted butter and maple syrup 🙂
You can use baking soda to deodorize many things; shoes, carpets, closets, pet bedding, just to mention a few, use your imagination… I also use it as a personal deodorant you can read my simple baking soda deodorant post here!
Baking soda makes a great tooth cleanser plain with water, it also helps to deodorize the mouth… I regularly use minted toothpaste with baking soda but in a pinch plain baking soda would be just fine…
You might remember that I make soap,,, a couple of years back of wanted to take advantage of the tooth soap talk or use, and started using my soap to brush my teeth… I lasted about 8 months, but during that time my teeth became more pitted with cavities than they had before using tooth soap.
I think someone knows better than me about using toothpaste with fluoride,,, Fluoride was the only thing that I could come up with as to the reason my teeth got worse…. I now use toothpaste with fluoride we can’t afford to pay a dentist for preventable tooth troubles…
Until recently I had not thought about using it to exfoliate, added to a little oil, baking soda makes a fine exfoliating scrub, unlike salt it would be milder…
